Vintage Antonio Pineda Taxco 970 Sterling Silver Choker Necklace & Earrings

  
Beautiful vintage modernist sterling silver choker necklace / clip-on earrings set. Made circa 1950's by world renowned Mexican jeweler Antonio Pineda. 15 long with 95 grams of. Necklace is made of hollow wave form links approx. Matching clip on earrings have screw backs & weigh approx. Overall weight of set is approx. 108 grams / 3.8 oz. Necklace is stamped w/ Antonio's hallmark "Antonio Taxco", "568YY", "970", "Hechen Mexico" & "Silver". Earrings each have makers hallmark on them. Condition: Overall very good condition. Minor surface scuffs / scratches on silver consistent with normal wear. Silver is tarnished; did not attempt to polish. A Taxco native, Antonio Pineda was among the most prominent of the many silversmiths to emerge from the mountain mining town beginning in the 1930s. At age 14 he became an apprentice for the highly acclaimed "Father of Contemporary Mexican Silver" Willam Spratling.

He worked with him for 8 years before going out on his own in 1941 and attending a trade school in order to refine his craftsmanship. He went on to become the preeminent proponent & producer of Mexican Modernism in the decorative arts. He was praised praised for his bold, striking jewelry designs and ingenious use of gemstones. Antonio died in 2009 at the age of 90.
