ANTONIO PINEDA 970 Silver+Onyx Door Knocker EARRINGSBest Vintage Taxco Sterling. Fabulous Antonio Pineda dangling earrings with thick bezel-set onyx disks and articulated silver door knockers. With an elegant and effective design, these earrings were likely inspired both by Pre-Columbian forms as well as Mid-Century Modernist sensibilities and look both timeless and up-to-date. The earrings will frame your face beautifully and with the movement of the silver crescents, are so alluring and eye-catching with the slightest toss of your head.

Antonio is known and sought after for his highly original and skillful rendering of modernist forms. These earrings are a pair of miniature sculptures that show off Antonio's acclaimed design. Execution skills, combining silver and stone to marvelous effect.

Applied silver beading at the sides, vaguely echoing the shape of the pins just below that hold the crescents and allow them to swing freely, was an inspired design detail that adds immeasurably to the look of the earrings, providing balance while suggesting something both primitive and at the same time, futuristic. I must have been staring at them too long because they seem to be taking on an anthropomorphic character as I think I see a face in them, perhaps a martian's! The earrings have screw-on findings that were carefully placed at an angle so they will fit perfectly on the ear lobe. Dimensional (as I have tried to show in some of the photos), the earrings measure about 7/8" tall by about 7/8" wide by over 1/4 deep.

Together, they weigh 20.2 grams. The back of the other earring is signed "Hecho en Mexico" along with the eagle hallmark around a number that is hard to read, possibly "17". The earrings are in Excellent vintage condition with just expected surface dirt, including remnants of old silver polish, mostly around the findings and in the incised signature stamps on the back, light scratches and tarnish. These Sterling and Onyx earrings, by one of the most highly regarded and collectible of the Mexican silver Masters, belong equally in collections of Mid-Century Mexican silver, modernist design and jewelry.

Although I doubt you will want to part with them, they will come to you in a gift box, just in case. In versatile silver and black, they will go with everything, night or day to work or play and are ones you will find you reach for and wear all the time. With their lively, sculptural design and effective combination of materials, they are superb examples of the fine workmanship for which Antonio Pineda is celebrated and will make a superb addition to your collection!
