Vintage Gerardo Lopez Taxco Mexican Sterling Silver Necklace Earrings 20720
This is a beautiful sterling silver necklace and earrings set by Taxco master silversmith, Gerardo Lopez, circa 1950s. Featuring an attractive Aztec cross design, similar to the fertility motifs of Hector Aguilar, and sporting a quite beautiful patina. The necklace closes with a well working slide in clasp and the earrings are screwbacks. Gerardo Lopez is a Taxco artisan who consistently produced lovely and well made jewelry during the 1950s. His work is beginning to command high prices these days and I'm not surprised. Lopez is featured in Morrill and Berk's "must have" reference book, titled Mexican Silver on pages 238 - 239 (the newest edition). They go on to say that Lopez had a large shop and taller in Taxco during the 50's and his shop was known as being one of the best silver shops there. Even well known author Christie Romero (of Warman's Guides) discusses Lopez's work as not well known, but extremely well done. I have had the pleasure of having much of Lopez's work over the years, and without exception, it has always been of the highest quality and craftsmanship. You can see his work, most often, in solid sterling silver and occasionally with inlaid stone or shell. His enamel on sterling work is considered scarce. And, only occasionally do you find his work set with gemstones. I wish there was more information on some of these artisans like Gerardo Lopez whose work, I think, is under appreciated making it an excellent investment!
