The American born Margot van Voorhies Carr, met and fell in love with Antonio Castillo while vacationing in Taxco, Mexico in 1937. The couple soon married and Margot relocated to Taxco.
Castillo was an accomplished silver smith, who had trained with William Spratling. He encouraged Margots artistic talents and introduced her to jewelry and silver design. Her creations began to sell quickly, which prompted Castillo and his brothers to separate from Spratling, eventually establishing their own atelier. After a brief decade of success, Margot and Castillo split, both professionally and romantically. On her own, she took on the name Margot de Taxco by which she is still referred to today. Margot employed many talented silver smithies to bring her designs to life including Miguel Arias, Hilario Lopez, Miguel Melendez, Melicio Rodriguez, and Jaime Quiroz.
Margot de Taxco is best known for her silver and colorful enamel jewelry pieces, most notably The silver and enamel snake. She was presented with El Galardon (the award) for best Taxco silver jewelry in 1954. She actively designed until her death in 1974. This set is an exquisite example of her work and skill.
