Handmade in the Art Deco era in the Byzantine Bali style. Each earring features a large, lovely carnelian stone in a semi-translucent, warm orange-red hue; please reference the third photo provided above for a staged example of the stones' semi-translucency. The stones rest securely inside caps which are adorned with Byzantine Bali-style wire twist designs. The earrings also showcase a silver dome created using the repousse metalworking technique.

Finished with shepherd's crook backings for secure wear on pierced ears. The earrings contain tarnish in some areas, which gives them a lovely antique quality. This listing is for the item only. Carnelian is a beautiful form of chalcedony gemstone that has been used to create jewelry for nearly 5000 years. It is an opaque-looking stone that ranges in red hues from pale orange to an intense, almost black blood red.

Called the stone of kings, carnelian was well suited to carving, and would often be used in seal rings by the great ancient civilizations. Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure.
