We were lucky enough to come across a matching necklace. This beautiful piece was made during a period called the Art Nouveau Era! This time was alsocalled "La Belle Epoque" in French which translates to "A Beautiful Time". This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. The Art Nouveau period was famous for its flowing organic designs, flowing ladies, flowing floral designs, regal designs. The Russian silver standard is based on the zolotnik, a coin circulating in Kievan Rus in the late 11th century. It was originally pegged to 1/96th of a Russian pound, which was later changed to 1/72nd of a Russian pound.

One zolotnik is equal to 4,266 grams. A variety of purities, also called titre ratings, are used for Russian silver. When converted to the metric parts per thousand, there are various levels of purity. The 84 (875/100) degree of purity is by far the most common, and became the standard for every-day Russian silver purity.

Cloisonné is a form of enamel work that is used on jewelry and to decorate Fabergé eggs, vases, or other such items. A craftsman would have used thin silver or gold strips or wires to create compartments on the metal object in a certain design. Enamel would have been specially made to fill these compartments while leaving the metal visible for added design. The enamel could be made into various colors and pieces featuring cloisonné usually have more than one color of enamel. Russian cloisonné from the Tsarist era is highly prized by collectors, especially if it is from the House of Fabergé or Khlebnikov.

Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver first formed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refined by hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as an eye-catching treasure. The earrings include cloisonné style enamel in varying shades of dark blue, light blue, green, and a red-orange hue. The earrings include traditional handmade Art Nouveau Russian Era craftsmanship. The piece was made in the repousse style of soldering two layers of silver together. However, this piece is special because the two layers were made of different purities of silver. This technique was very rare due to the different melting points of the silver, if the craftsman had been a few degrees off, the entire piece would have been ruined. The piece is made of intricate compartments for the enamel, as well as swirled designs within and silver braided tassels that are graduated in length. The earrings measure just about 3" long and just over 3/4" wide. The earrings are secured by a Shepard's Hook backing with a safety catch. Antique and Vintage jewelry is disappearing at alarming rates. Unfortunately, most of the jewelry from this time period has been lost or melted down over the years, please don't miss your chance to own this special piece of history! 84, 900, NU Maker's Mark.
